REPORTS TO: ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF MAINTENANCE |
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Responsible for performing all duties associated with the excavation, backfill, installation and restoration of sewer and water utilities and repair of collection/distribution systems, treatment plants and sewage pump stations
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

- Operate, maintain, clean, inspect, and drive vehicles like the vacuum truck, dump truck and dumpster truck etc.
- Train other employees in the operation of equipment.
- Operate rubber-tired backhoes and loaders; track hoes and loaders; impactors and rollers.
- Daily routine maintenance of equipment and associated maintenance records.
- Perform skilled labor work such as pipe laying, concrete work, mason’s tender, asphalt work, landscaping work. Also assist electrician’s, pump shop and mechanic as a helper. And mow/clear right of ways as needed.
- Work with maintenance crews rehabilitating digesters, clarifiers, sewer mains/laterals and manholes.
- Perform production work (set footage per day).
- Responsible for crew in supervisor’s absence.
- Performs other related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to operate any type of construction equipment in a safe and productive manner.
- Ability to carry line and grade for the installation of sewer and water.
- Ability to maintain required paperwork.
- Ability and knowledge to install and/or repair water and sewer utilities and to lead crew.
- Ability to read cut/reference sheets and to work by field stakeout
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Five years of experience as an equipment operator installing utilities.
- Two years of experience in concrete, masonry, carpentry, storm drainage, or paving.
(A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is sometimes heavy work requiring the ability to apply 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift 100 pounds. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, assemble or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operations of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License w/Tanker Endorsement
- Willingness to be on call 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
