Ride Assist Program FAQ

What is the Ride Assist Program?

The Ride Assist Program is a transportation service developed to assist and supplement the elderly and individuals with disabilities in meeting their transportation needs. The program provides general purpose transportation for eligible individuals.

Who is eligible for the program?

Anyone age 60 or over and/or individuals with disabilities who, for one or more reasons, cannot utilize the Washington County Transit fixed-route buses. Participants in the program must have an annually updated application on file.

How do I apply?

Call the WCT office to have an application mailed to you, or stop by 1000 West Washington Street, Hagerstown, MD to pick one up. If the applicant is under age 60, you must have your application certified by a healthcare professional acknowledging your disability. Then simply mail or drop off the application at the WCT office. Faxes will not be accepted. You will be notified by mail of your eligibility.

How do I purchase vouchers?

Vouchers may be purchased at the WCT office or by mail. Business/personal checks, money orders or credit cards are accepted.

How do I save money using vouchers, and how many may I buy each month?

You may purchase a set number of vouchers per month at a reduced rate. By using the vouchers, you will save at least 50% in the cost of taxi fares.

What types of vehicles are available and what hours do they run?

Vehicle information can be obtained by contacting the provider(s) directly. Service provider contact information is available from WCT.

How do I schedule a ride?

Call any of the registered providers to schedule your trip. After your trip pay the driver with your vouchers. Vouchers come in a variety of denominations. Ride Assist vouchers cannot be used for tipping purposes

Is there a time limit on using the vouchers?

Yes. Vouchers expire on June 30 of each year. However, if you do not use all of the vouchers you purchased in the course of the month, you may use them at a later time during the year of issuance.

How often must I apply for the program?

Applications expire June 30 of every year. You must reapply annually if you wish to continue using the program.

The Ride Assist Program is a financially constraint grant-funded program. Availability of funding will determine the duration of the program.
