HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 30, 2024) – The Washington Board of County Commissioners is looking for applicants interested in serving on the Property Tax Assessment Appeals Board. Each County in Maryland has jurisdiction over all appeals in its area concerning property tax assessments, the Home Owners’ Tax Credit Program, the Renters’ Tax Credit Program, the Agricultural Land Preservation Easement Program, and other local tax matters assigned to the board for hearing. This jurisdiction includes but is not limited to appeals concerning local tax credits, local taxes, and special taxing areas (Code Tax – Property Article, Title 3.)
The Property Tax Assessment Appeals Board consists of three members and one alternate, recommended by the County Commissioners and appointed by the Governor for a five-year term. Applicants must be residents of Washington County and should not currently hold a real estate sales license or be actively employed as a real estate appraiser. Board members must be available for approximately 20-30 daytime meetings per year and are paid per meeting by the State for their services.
