Washington County Emergency Personnel Responds to Railroad Bridge Fire

HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 24, 2024) – The Washington County Division of Emergency Services responded to a call at 3:38 PM reporting a fire on the CSX railroad bridge over the Potomac River in Sandy Hook, MD.

First responders arrived on the scene at 3:47 PM and reported a large fire on the bridge that looked to be spreading quickly. Units immediately requested additional Washington County units and personnel as well as support from Jefferson County. Washington County also requested two boats as a safety precaution as crews on the bridge were working on an elevated structure above the Potomac River.

Due to the high temperatures and extensive fire damage, additional units from Washington County, Jefferson County, and Frederick County were called in, along with water tankers from all three counties due to limited water supply access.

Washington County’s Office of Emergency Management was also on scene and assisted with notifications and additional resources. The Washington County Air Unit/Rehab and the mobile ambulance bus were requested along with two ALS transport units and safety officers.

Units reported the fire under control at 5:30 pm. They are now extinguishing hot spots and awaiting the arrival of CSX to assess the extent of the damage and determine necessary repairs.

The Washington County Division of Emergency Services extends its gratitude to all units involved for their support and cooperation. This incident underscores the critical importance of mutual aid collaboration in managing complex emergency situations.
