Washington County Division of Emergency Services Celebrates Life Savers Award Honorees

HAGERSTOWN, MD (November 19, 2024) – This morning, the Washington County Division of Emergency Services (DES), in partnership with Meritus Medical Center, proudly hosted a special ceremony to recognize extraordinary first responders whose swift actions saved a life. The Life Savers Award celebrates their expertise, resilience, and the profound impact of their work.

The Life Savers Award honors those who perform life-saving actions during cardiac arrest incidents, showcasing exceptional teamwork and skill. It provides an opportunity for first responders to reconnect with patients whose lives they’ve saved—an experience that highlights the direct and meaningful outcomes of their efforts.

“This award is a tribute to the bravery and professionalism of first responders who often face unimaginable challenges without recognition. It also serves as a reminder of their critical role in preserving life and creating lasting memories for families,” said Casey McKnight, EMS Supervisor for DES.

On July 18, 2024, Mr. Keeding suffered a witnessed cardiac arrest. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of Washington County DES, Williamsport Fire and EMS, and the trauma team at Meritus Medical Center, he was resuscitated and transported for advanced care.

“Without their quick response time, extensive knowledge, and skill, this outcome could have been tragically different. Today, Mr. Keeding is able to enjoy precious time with his family, including meeting his great-grandchild for the first time,” McKnight said.

Timeline of Events

  • EMS Supervisor C. McKnight and Medic 29 team (Paramedic Colten Matheny, EMT Brad Green, and EMT John Sharpe) arrived on the scene to find Mr. Keeding unresponsive.
  • After moving him to a position for care, Brad Green began CPR when the patient’s pulse was lost. Colten Matheny continued CPR and initiated cardiac monitoring.
  • Supplies were efficiently managed and delivered by John Sharpe, facilitating seamless care.
  • After multiple rounds of CPR, the team achieved a return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). By the time Mr. Keeding was in the ambulance, he was alert and communicating—a moment of relief for his family.

Additional support from Technicians Steve Hurst Jr. and Cody Boward of Williamsport Fire and EMS, as well as the exceptional post-resuscitation care provided by the team at Meritus Medical Center, played a critical role in this success story.

Cardiac arrest survival rates in the U.S. are less than 10%, making this event a rare and extraordinary achievement. The Life Savers Award not only acknowledges the professionalism of those involved but also serves as a reminder of the profound difference they make in the lives of patients and their families.
