Washington County Appoints Alan Matheny as the Director of Emergency Management and Communication

HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 18, 2024) – The Washington County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to announce the appointment of Alan Matheny as the Director of Emergency Management and Communication. Matheny brings with him a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to public safety, having previously served with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Alan Matheny’s career in public service spans over three decades, with significant contributions in various capacities within the Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services. During this time he worked for The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, The Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway, MD Inc., The Washington County Department of Permits & Inspections, and the Washington County Special Response Team. His extensive background in law enforcement and emergency management makes him exceptionally well-suited for this critical leadership role.

As Director of Emergency Management and Communication, Matheny will be responsible for overseeing the county’s emergency preparedness and response initiatives. His role includes coordinating efforts with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of Washington County residents. He will also lead the 911 Communication Department, enhancing public information and communication strategies to keep the community informed and engaged.

Alan Matheny expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “I am honored to serve Washington County in this capacity and look forward to working with our dedicated team to ensure the safety and security of our community. Together, we will continue to build resilient and prepared communities that can effectively respond to any emergency.”

Alan lives in western Washington County with his wife, Melissa, and son Colten.
