HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 24, 2019) – The Washington County Division of Emergency Services and Division of Engineering announces Sandy Hook Road is now open to traffic.
This morning a team met to assess the site where a landslide occurred in May 2018. As a precautionary measure, the road was closed last night after identifying loose material at the top of the slope. An engineering consultant team that has been routinely monitoring this site, along with county staff and emergency services has deemed that the road is now safe to travel and is open to traffic. Please be advised that concrete traffic barriers will be placed next week along the edge of the road to provide additional safety measures until permanent repairs are commenced by the National Park Service.
The safety of citizens is the County’s top priority. We understand closing Sandy Hook Road can significantly impact the commute time for residents living in this area. The quick response by all parties involved allowed for a fast and safe resolution to this concern.
