HAGERSTOWN, MD (July 9, 2019) – Washington County Government welcomed Maryland CommerceSecretary Kelly M. Schulz to the area today. Secretary Schulz visitedRider Jet Center, where she made history by being the first member of any Governor’s cabinet in Maryland to fly in a PT-19 Fairchild-built aircraft. In honor of this historic event, the Hagerstown Aviation Museum will be renaming the plane to ‘Miss Kelly.’
Secretary Schulz continued her visit by leading a roundtable with key economic development stakeholders in Washington County at The Volvo Group in Hagerstown. The purpose of this roundtable was to provide an index of progress, growth, and status of economic development to the Secretary.
In conjunction with this roundtable, Volvo Group North America announced the Volvo Group powertrain facility in Hagerstown will be “introducing a new machining operation, expanding automated manual transmission (AMT) assembly, and adding core logistics management. The company is investing $43 million and adding 85 new jobs in the powertrain production plant, where it develops and produces heavy-duty diesel engines, transmissions, and axles for Volvo Group brands.”
President Jeff Cline of Washington County Board of County Commissioners says, “The Volvo Group expansion continues to confirm its positive business partnership with Washington County now and into the future.”
County Administrator Robert Slocum says, “Washington County is proud to be the home of Volvo and the highly sophisticated manufacturing they perform here.”
Susan Small, Director of Business Development says, “The Washington County DBD is looking forward to working with Volvo Group Trucks and their continued investment into the manufacturing industry, and creation of jobs here in Washington County.”
President Cline, Commissioner Meinelschmidt, County Administrator Rob Slocum, Director of Business Development Susan Small, Business Leader Jonathan Horowitz, Business Specialist Linda Spence, and Agricultural Business Specialist Leslie Hart were in attendance on behalf of the County.
