Stay Safe This Labor Day Weekend!

HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 3, 2021) – With a near-perfect forecast for this Labor Day weekend, many citizens may choose to spend it outside and on a local waterway. The Washington County Emergency Management reminds citizens that as Tropical Depression Ida passed through the area earlier this week, the Upper Potomac River, Conococheague Creek, and Antietam Creek may be at higher levels with a faster flow over the next several days. Below is a chart that indicates the different water levels in the Potomac River and a graph of current water levels in the Potomac River at Hancock. Click each photo for more information.
 
 
It is important to take all safety measures into account before getting on the water this weekend to avoid water rescues requiring the use of overtaxed rescue resources.
 
Safety tips specifically for kayaks and canoes include:
 
  • Check the weather water levels before planning your trip. Water levels can be checked at the National Weather Service.
  • Plan a trip within your skill level.
  • Create and share a float plan.
  • Bring essential safety gear.
  • Wear clothing to be fully immersed in water.
  • Do not go alone.

LIBERAL LEAVE IS IN EFFECT FOR WASHINGTON COUNTY GOVERNMENT

Liberal leave is in effect for all non-essential personal on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, until noon. Essential personnel are expected to fulfill their duties as usual.
