Smithsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant to Receive Upgrades

HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 24, 2024) The Washington County Department of Water Quality is upgrading and expanding the capacity of the Smithsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant. The current plant capacity is 333,000 gallons per day and will be expanded to a rated capacity of 450,000 gallons per day. The additional capacity will create an additional 585 residential services for future development in and around the Town of Smithsburg.

The treatment process will be upgraded to provide Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR). This enables the plant to reduce the pounds of Nitrogen and Phosphorus being discharged from the plant into the receiving stream and ultimately into the Chesapeake Bay. Reducing the concentrations of these nutrients in the Chesapeake Bay benefits the aquatic life and overall quality of the water.

For additional information, please contact the Washington County Department of Water Quality at 240-313-2600.
