Gaming Commission Awards over $1.6 Million in Allocations

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 11, 2020) – The Washington County Gaming Commission announced its gaming fund distribution to the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, as well as 40 local charitable organizations.
The Gaming Fund total of $1,671,558.59 for fiscal year 2020, which ended June 30, represents a decrease of $373,440.96 when compared to fiscal year 2019 revenues.
State law requires funds be divided equally between the Washington County Fire and Rescue Association and local charities, and in January the Washington County Fire and Rescue Association received $443,244.98. As of today, an additional $392,534.32 will be distributed, bringing the yearly total for Fire and Rescue to $835,779.30.
In May, the Washington County Gaming Commission received 77 separate applications from 70 charitable organizations requesting a total of $1,528,915.14. After a one-day workshop in July, and virtual public hearing in June, the Commission was able to either partially or fully fund 47 of the 77 requests. Of the 77 applications received, 7 received full funding, 40 received partial funding, and 30 were denied funding. A total of $835,779.29 of 2020 gaming funds were allocated to 40 of the 70 charitable organizations applying. This year an additional $408.82 was distributed to charitable organizations, due to funds being returned from an organization unable to spend their prior year gaming award funds within the one-year grant period. All gaming grant funds are required to be spent within one year of award, any unspent funds are returned to the fund for reallocation. Including these funds, a total of $836,188.11 was distributed to charitable organizations.
The Community Free Clinic received the largest award of $150,000 followed by R.E.A.C.H of Washington County receiving $75,000, and Brook Lane Health Services, Inc. receiving $60,000.
