HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 4, 2024) – The Washington County, MD Department of Business and Economic Development is excited to announce that October is officially designated as Manufacturing Month in Washington County! Kicking off on October 4, 2024, with Manufacturing Day, this month-long celebration recognizes the vital role of our local manufacturing sector.
In honor of this occasion, the Department of Business and Economic Development is proud to announce the release of four inspiring videos featuring a selection of our local manufacturers and their exceptional products—Conagra Brands, Fives Landis Corp., Hub Labels, Inc., and IKO – Northeast, Inc. These videos aim to showcase modern manufacturing and motivate the next generation of skilled workers. A video will be unveiled each Friday on October 4, 11, 18, and 25, culminating in a special presentation of all four videos released on October 31, 2024, to close out our celebration of Manufacturing Month.
Forged for Thought: Brothers Samuel and Daniel Hughes are believed to be the first manufacturers in Washington County, MD (according to the Washington County Historical Trust), dating back to 1766. They operated a forge to heat and shape pigs of iron, producing arms for both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, including tacks and nails at their Antietam Forge. Additionally, Daniel Hughes went on the become one of the first Washington County Commissioners after the war. The more you know!
So, join us in celebrating the ingenuity and impact of manufacturing in our community! Thank a manufacturer today!
