TRAFFIC ALERT: Sandy Hook Road Closed Due to Train Derailment

HAGERSTOWN, MD (December 21, 2019) – The Washington County Division of Emergency Services informs the public that Sandy Hook Road is closed effective immediately due to a freight line train derailment. Sandy Hook Road will remain open to local traffic and emergency services. The road closure is expected to last until midnight with the possibility of extending into tomorrow morning.
Around 2:50 a.m., a freight line traveling across the Potomac River derailed with several train cars plummeting into the river. Washington County Emergency Management is closely monitoring the scene and reports no injuries, no spills, no hazardous materials and no immediate danger to the public.
The MARC commuter line is unaffected and remains open.
