Mattress and Box Springs Recycling Program Now Available at 40 West Landfill

Mattress & Box Springs Recycling Program

Washington County, MD residents may recycle mattresses and box springs for $5 each at the 40 West Land Fill. Only clean items will be accepted into the recycling program. No permit is required.

Recycling Fundamentals

  • A+ behaviors that will help the community recycling drop off sites.
  • Please be clean!
  • Lightly rinse off recyclable containers
  • Do not place any material outside the recycling bin
  • Close doors after dumping in recyclables
  • Be careful not to drop glass or litter
  • Try to deliver no more than a one week accumulation of recyclable& per visit
  • Cut cardboard into small flat sheets
  • Do not leave anything that is not accepted in the program.
  • Contact the Washington County Recycling Office with questions or problems at 240-313-2796 or 240-313-2790.
  • You no longer need a permit to recycle.  You can now recycle by going across the scales for $30 per ton (at the 40 West Landfill only).

What is Recyclable?

  • Mixed Paper: newspaper, office paper, junk mail, magazines, cereal box paper, phonebooks.No photo paper.
  • Commingled Material: food & beverage cans, glass bottles & jars, #1 – #7 rigid plastic containers. No oil bottles.
  • Separated Flattened Cardboard (no larger than 2 foot square)
  • Used Motor Oil & Antifreeze (Maximum 5 gallons per visit)
  • Power Tool Rechargeable Batteries
  • Scrap Metal (Greensburg & Hancock Sites Only)
  • No paper contaminated with food, oil or grease
  • No paper heavily coated with plastic
  • No foam packaging
  • No plastic bins, buckets or barrels
  • No window glass, Pyrex or ceramics

  • Lead Acid Batteries (car, truck, yard equipment)
  • All other rechargeable batteries (no single use batteries)
  • Power Tool Rechargeable Batteries
  • Used Vegetable Oil (5 gallon per visit)
  • Scrap Metal (please drain oil & fuel if applicable)
  • Propane Tanks (empty) 20lb gas grill only
  • Cardboard (silver trailer)
  • Mattresses and box springs ($5 fee for each, all items must be clean)
  • Electronics including computers and attachments, regular and flat screen TV’s (no wood cabinets), VCR’s, CD/DVD players, PDA’s, radios, all phones, etc.
  • Refrigerators, freezers, A/C Units, water coolers, dehumidifiers
  • Yard Debris less than 4 inches in diameter (Fee applies unless residential permit is purchased).
  • Tires
  • No paper contaminated with food, oil or grease
  • No paper heavily coated with plastic
  • No soft foam packaging
  • No plastic bins, buckets or barrels
  • No window glass, Pyrex or ceramics
  • No recyclables from businesses
  • No styrofoam

Anyone who wishes to bring six (6) or more tires in a 12 month period must obtain a Temporary Scrap Tire Waiver through the State of Maryland. Please call: 410-537-3314 to obtain a waiver or for more information. The waiver is free of charge and is usually approved within 48 hours.

Liberal Leave is in effective for Washington County Government

LIBERAL LEAVE IS IN EFFECT FOR WASHINGTON COUNTY GOVERNMENT

Liberal leave is in effect for all non-essential personal on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, until noon. Essential personnel are expected to fulfill their duties as usual.

The starting time for today’s Board of County Commissioners meeting will be reevaluated at 9:00 am.

For those required to travel, exercise caution on the roadways. If driving is necessary, ensure your vehicle is completely cleared, drive at a reduced speed, practice caution, and avoid crowding or passing plows.
