HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 8, 2024) – The Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor Tropical Storm Debby. The remnants of Tropical Storm Debby are expected to bring significant weather impacts to Washington County starting from midnight tonight through Friday evening, according to the latest briefing from the National Weather Service (NWS) Baltimore/Washington.
Key Threats:
- Flash Flooding: Heavy rainfall of 3 to 5 inches is expected, with localized amounts up to 7 inches possible. This will increase the risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
- Minor River Flooding: Local rivers may experience minor flooding due to the excessive rainfall.
- Tornadoes: Tornadoes are possible across the region late tonight through Friday afternoon.
- Gusty Winds: Winds of 30 to 50 mph, with higher gusts, are anticipated, which may cause power outages and tree damage.
Preparedness Actions:
Residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions ahead of the storm. Please secure outdoor items, avoid driving through flooded areas, and monitor local alerts for updates.
- Flood Watch: A Flood Watch is in effect, with the bulk of rainfall expected from midnight tonight into Friday morning.
