Washington County is Accepting Applications for Members to the Building Code Board of Appeals

HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 6, 2024) – The Washington Board of County Commissioners recently passed amendments to our local adoption of the International Existing Building Code, which impacts the Building Code Board of Appeals. The County Commissioners are seeking members to fill current vacancies.

The Board of Appeals shall have the responsibility to hear and decide appeals to orders, decisions, or determinations made by the Building Code Official relative to the application and interpretation of the Building Code. In exercising the above-mentioned responsibilities, the Board may, in conformity with the provisions of law and the Washinton County Building Code (as amended, and inclusive of all building codes enforced by the County’s Code Official), reverse or affirm, wholly or partly, or may modify the order, requirement, decision, or determination appealed from, and make such order, requirement, decision or determination as ought to be made.  Applications will be accepted until an adequate pool of candidates is attained.

The Board is looking for five (5) voting members who are qualified by experience and/or training to pass on matters pertaining to building construction and trade. You must be a resident of Washington County. Citizens interested in serving on the Building Code Board of Appeals are encouraged to apply early in the process.
